Winter Driving: Preventing a Car Accident

Icy road conditions during winter can increase a person’s risk of being involved in a car accident by a large margin. According to the Federal Highway Administration, an average of approximately 225,000 crashes occur each year due to falling sleet and snow. Since the risks are so much higher during this time of year, it is imperative that you take certain precautions to reduce your risk of a collision. Our firm has compiled a short list of tips to keep you safe on the roads this winter.

1. Install New Wiper Blades: Make sure your windshield wipers are in tip-top shape. Inclement weather can make visibility difficult enough as it is. Old or faulty wipers can only worsen the situation.

2. Maintain Your Tires: A nifty tip to check if your tires are worn is to take a penny and insert it into the treads of your tires. If Lincoln’s head is visible, it is time to replace your tires. Keeping the proper pressure on your tires is important, too.

3.Use Tire Chains: Connecticut winters are often icy, meaning that you should sometimes use tire chains to prevent skidding. Chains are allowed from November 15 to April 30.

4.Slow Down: Speeding on slippery roads is one of the easiest ways to cause an accident. Drive slightly under the speed limit to compensate for adverse conditions.

5.Don’t Tailgate: Keeping sufficient distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you can help prevent rear-end accidents. If a vehicle in front of you suddenly slams on their brakes and you are far enough behind, you will likely be able to react in time. Keep a distance of at least one car-length.

6.Eliminate Distractions: This one rings true for every driver, regardless of weather conditions. Activities such as texting, playing with onboard GPS systems, reading, and loud music can cause visual, manual, and cognitive distraction, taking your focus off the road and increasing your chances of causing an accident.
