Traffic Accidents Due to Human Error on the Rise

Posted By Sette & Parnoff, PC || 15-Nov-2016

Despite major advances in automotive technology and the introduction of state-of-the-art safety features such as blind spot detection, vehicle stabilizers, anti-lock brakes, and lane departure warnings in modern cars, car accidents are still one of the leading causes of death in the United States. In fact, traffic deaths are up in 2016, with nearly 18,000 fatalities occurring during the first six months of this year – a 10.4% jump over last year’s numbers for the same time period.

Unfortunately, this upward trend in the number of road fatalities has been the case since 2014, effectively reversing decades of progress led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to reduce traffic-related deaths. But why is the case, when cars are safer than ever? The answer, according to NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind, is human error.

Driver Negligence Carries a Steep Toll

According to Rosekind, a stunning 94 percent of crashes can be tied back to some form of human choice or error. Negligent decisions or errors which can lead to road deaths include:

  • Drinking and driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Driving at unsafe speeds
  • Texting and driving
  • Changing lanes without signaling
  • Following too closely

As a result of acts such as these, roughly 100 people are killed on our nation’s roads per day – a loss equal to that of two regional jet crashes per day. While advances in technology do indeed save lives, Rosekind says the greatest challenge still remains to change human behavior. “We have an immediate crisis on our hands and we also have a long-term challenge,” Rosekind commented. “The technology enthusiasm is just because [it’s] a new tool,” he said, “[but] it’s not an answer.”

While self-driving cars may eventually eliminate the issue of driver error, the technology is still in its infancy and will likely not see widespread use for quite some time. In the meantime, drivers simply need to exercise extreme caution and employ defensive driving tactics to minimize their chances of being involved in a collision.
