Does Your Nursing Home Have a History of Violations?

Does Your Nursing Home Have a History of Violations?

Choosing a nursing home facility can be immensely stressful. When your loved one is no longer able to live on their own and needs round-the-clock care and attention, you want to provide them with the best care available. However, while all nursing home facilities will do everything they can to make themselves stand out and look great on the surface, finding out what life is like for patients can be tricky. You can always talk to existing residents or patients and find out how they feel, but the truth of the matter is this isn’t always the easiest or most reliable.

However, Connecticut residents have a useful tool at their disposal which makes this significantly easier—a convenient online search tool that goes through released nursing home inspection report histories and details various violations. The tool, built by non-profit ProPublica, makes searching for a facility by name, city, or even specific keywords easy.

You can find the tool on ProPublica’s website by clicking here.

The tool became a reality as a response to the shocked and outraged reactions to the release of this information which detailed some egregious violations of nursing home duties right here in our home state. Among the largest number of violations were for “elopements,” which is the industry term for when a resident is able to get out of the facility while they are still supposed to be under the watch and care of staff members.

While many facilities and industry players deny the magnitude of the problem, they also say there are definitely ways that things could be fixed. In addition to holding staff members accountable when these clear violations happen, the Department of Public Health has an inspection program that has them see each nursing home anywhere from five to six times per year.

We always recommend that families with loved ones in care facilities go and visit their loved ones frequently and unannounced. Facilities that know this is a possibility are far more likely to take extra care and precaution.

If you suspect your loved one has been abused or their care has been negligent at a nursing home facility, discuss your options by calling the Hamden elder abuse attorneys at Sette & Parnoff, PC at {F:P:Site:Phone} today!
