Drunk Driving Statistics in Connecticut: Finding a Solution

Drunk Driving Statistics in Connecticut: Finding a Solution

Drunk driving and resulting DUI-related car accidents have been a major concern for safety organizations nationwide for decades now. Statistics and studies coming out of Connecticut show that the state has its own significant trouble with this dangerous behavior as well. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 1,039 drunk driving fatalities in Connecticut between the years 2003 and 2012. The majority of these deaths were males between the ages 21 and 34.

Information collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also sheds a light on an intriguing, albeit harrowing, aspect of drunk driving incidents in Connecticut. According to their findings, as little as 6% of drivers arrested for a DUI in the state between 2010 and 2012 had prior DUI convictions. This does not necessarily mean, however, that people are being pulled over and arrested the very first time they get behind the wheel drunk; it could simply suggest that most DUI offenders do so many times before they are ever caught. The CDC also asked survey participants if they ever drank to intoxication and then driven their vehicle; only 2.1% admitted to this dangerous behavior.

Solutions and Strategies to Stop Drunk Driving

The NHTSA and the CDC are both taking strides to reduce the number of drunk driving accidents in the state each year, hopefully down to zero. Mandatory ignition interlock device (IID) installation for first-time convictions are becoming more and more common, for example; an IID will not allow someone to start their car if their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is reported at 0.02% or greater. Campaigns targeting young drivers – who are the number one source of drunk driving accidents according to the data collected – are also being drafted and implemented, even reaching out to schools for participation.

Sometimes people will only learn once their wallet has been affected. If you have been hit by a drunk driver, you need to take legal action against them for compensation for your injuries, including punitive damages. At Sette & Parnoff, PC, our Hamden auto accident attorneys can help you file a claim and prepare your case for litigation, should a fair settlement not be reached outside of court.
