Hands-Free Cell Phone Use: Is it Any Safer?

Hands-Free Cell Phone Use: Is it Any Safer?

Beginning January 2017, drivers are offered no exceptions for holding their cell phone while driving. This includes any and all of the following actions among all other actions that require you to have your phone in your hand and not on the steering wheel:

  • Snapping photos
  • Taking videos
  • Using a GPS
  • Making phone calls
  • Texting
  • Asking Siri a question

For a long time now, the dangers of texting while driving or making a phone call have been made known, and legislative action has restricted such actions.

A new study has been released from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia that has brought new insight to the lawmakers. This study has indicated that mental distraction is just as present on hands-free calls as it is on those made while holding the device.

The study shows that reaction time, regardless of whether on a hand-held or hands-free device is significantly longer for drivers on a phone call than for those not using a phone. The study also revealed that reaction times for individuals with provisional driver’s licenses is twice as long as those with full licenses. Additionally, those engaged in a phone conversation are more inclined to brake abruptly.
